Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a two-subunit glycoprotein hormone that shares receptor activity with luteinizing hormone at the LH/CG receptor. It is used in reproductive and endocrine research involving receptor binding, cyclic-AMP signaling, steroidogenesis, gonadal cell function, glycosylation and hormone-assay development. HCG can also serve as a reference material in immunoassays, potency testing and comparative studies of glycoprotein-hormone structure and function. Biological activity can vary with glycoform, purity, storage and assay conditions, making batch-specific documentation especially important. International Units describe biological activity rather than simple peptide mass, so experimental planning should use the verified potency supplied on the Certificate of Analysis.
