MT II, commonly known as Melanotan II, is a synthetic cyclic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It acts as an agonist across multiple melanocortin receptor subtypes and is studied in receptor pharmacology, pigmentation biology, melanogenesis, appetite-related signaling and central melanocortin pathways. Research applications may include melanocortin receptor-binding assays, cyclic-AMP signaling, pigment-cell studies and comparisons with alpha-MSH, afamelanotide and bremelanotide. Because MT II is not highly selective for a single melanocortin receptor, observed effects may reflect activity at several receptor subtypes. Experimental work should therefore include appropriate receptor-selective controls and confirm peptide identity, purity and stability.
