Glutathione

Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine and glycine. In its reduced form, GSH is a central component of cellular redox homeostasis and participates in antioxidant defense, detoxification, thiol chemistry and reversible protein glutathionylation. Research applications include oxidative-stress models, enzyme assays, redox-ratio measurement, cell-signaling studies, analytical reference testing and investigation of the glutathione/glutaredoxin system. Because reduced glutathione can oxidize to GSSG, sample handling, oxygen exposure, temperature and storage conditions are important experimental variables. The product may be used to study chemical and biological properties of glutathione, but results should distinguish direct molecular effects from broader claims about systemic outcomes.
